Pilton Infants' School

Humanities

At Pilton Infants' School, we teach children about the world around us and its history through a range of exciting topics.  Most recently we have learned about China, Antarctica, Pirates, Space and Castles.

We stimulate the children's curiosity about historical events and link these with practical experiences. We help pupils to question and discuss aspects of history, geography and religious education that may affect their own lives and futures. Below, you can find information about our curriculum and examples of our big ideas and discussions!

During KS1 in history pupils develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time. They begin to know where the people and events they study fit within a chronological framework and identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods. They use a wide vocabulary of everyday historical terms.

In Geography, pupils develop knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom and their locality. They begin to understand basic subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and use geographical skills, including first-hand observation and map reading skills, to enhance their awareness of where they are in the world.

In R.E.  we aim to develop in children a sense of themselves and their place in the world as well as an understanding that there are many different world views and beliefs- globally, in this country and within their local community.  R.E. allows children to question and understand more about others and begins the journey which prepares them to take their own place in society as tolerant, respectful and enquiring citizens of the future.  At Pilton Infants, we share our ideas, our beliefs, both religious and non-religious, reflect on what we value and celebrate differences.  We learn about different faiths and world views through creative activities, looking at artefacts, photo resources and stories.
